Inspiring Thoughts by Illens Dort – Weekly Publication – Week 2

“It is hard to measure perfection with an imperfect instrument. We are all imperfect instruments that need constant calibration.” —                                                                                                         Illens Dort

From the comfort of your Internet devices and from the chamber of your hearts and minds, we welcome you this week to Inspiring Thoughts by Illens Dort. We appreciate all the followers who have shared their comments last week. We invite you to continue to impart of your gifts and talents to others. Our goal is to create a forum to lift the lives of those around us, even when some may be miles away from our physical reach.

As a student in the electronic engineering program I learned a very important principle about having the right instrument to measure current, voltage and power etc. Not only was it important to have the right instrument, it was also imperative to make sure that the instrument was properly calibrated. If the instrument was off, the reading was also off. This is also true for a scale. If the scale is off and is not centered to zero, the reading of the weight can’t be accurate.

As human, we may have a tendency to quickly judge others when we ourselves walk imperfectly. When we try to do a little better in our own lives we can become more patient with others.

We invite you to share your thoughts and let us know how this aphorism and these words have influenced your lives and actions for good this week. May you continue to press forward and spread rays of sunshine until we meet again next week.

Becoming a Person of Influence

Becoming a Person of Influence

“Leadership is influence” — John Maxwell

Early this year I had the privilege of speaking to the students of The Center for the Advancement of Leadership (CAL) program at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. This is a phenomenal group of students who are making a huge difference in their community. They are the leaders of this generation and they will lead us tomorrow. What an honor it was to associate with them. I express my gratitude to Amy and Belinda for this invitation.

I spoke on the subject of Becoming a Person of Influence, a book that John Maxwell wrote. I drew inspiration from that wonderful book and quoted many passages from it. John himself stated: “Leadership is influence – nothing more – nothing less.” In that book he shares 10 attributes that people of influence have. Two of these attributes are “A person of influence connects with people [and] reproduces other inlfuencers.”

I appreciate the warm welcome I received from the students and their parents as well as the leaders of the program. Here is a quick summary of their feedback they:

“Thank You so much for all the wonderful ways you’ve helped us all learn and grow! We are so grateful for the MANY ways you help us become better through your patience, wisdom, leadership, honesty, and kindness.” — Amy Harmer (Assistant Director – The Center for the Advancement of Leadership)

“Illens is an exceptional human being. His soft-spoken nature draws people as he draws pictures with his words. He did a wonderful job presenting material that challenged, but also resonated with our students.” — Belinda S. Han (Director – The Center for the Advancement of Leadership)

Customer Delight – The Customer is the Hero

Customer Delight – The Customer is the Hero

The Customer is the Heroe

It was an honor to be part of this Christmas party where Barbara Burnett gathered with her employees. Barbara is also a certified speaker, trainer and coach of The John Maxwell Team. She is the perfect example of a servant leader. It was refreshing to see her addressing her employees and sharing a powerful message that is the core of the culture of her organization: The Customer is the hero. It goes without saying that her employees know she values them.

You can feel there is an environment and a culture where everyone desires to and does add value to each other – where everyone values the job they have – where everyone values every customer they touch – where everyone adds value to customers and makes each customer feel like he or she is the hero.

As I had the privilege of being part of this Christmas party, it felt to me like a family Christmas party. The employees were comfortable one with another. I wish I had remembered to take this picture before the other employees had to leave.

I want to take this moment to thank Barbara and her team again for the opportunity to be in their mist and speak on the subject of Customer Delight. Recently, in February I was fortunate to attend Goldman Sachs 10K Small Businesses Summit in Washington DC with the theme; The Big Power of Small Businesses. I heard Warren Buffett shared this wisdom with all the 2200 small business owners in attendance: “Delighting your customers will always trump any brilliant marketing strategy.”

Customer satisfaction is a thing of the past. Customer delight is what makes the difference businesses that thrive and blossoms from businesses that merely survive. Our customers need to know that we care about them and we want them to succeed. They need to know and feel that when they find and work with us we will lighten their load and their problems matter to us.

Please share your thoughts on how important customer delight is to your business a provider and/or a consumer. Use #customerdelight.

Making Memories as Family by Serving Others

Making Memories as Family by Serving Others

“Life is given to us as a gift that we must share with others.” — Illens Dort

Alexis Courtney, FranNet Consultant, shares the experiences she had with her three wonderful children as they had an opportunity to serve together in an orphanage in Higuey, Dominican Republic.

“HumanEkdromi and Illens Dort made my life-long dream come true. I have always wanted to go on a service trip with my children. I had to wait until I felt they were old enough. The trip to the Dominican Republic came at the right time. Illens was very hands on and helped me feel extremely safe. My children and I thrived working at an orphanage and cherish those memories. I’m not sure we will be able to go on another family trip without some type of service. Thank you Illens for making a life changing impact on my family and me.

You too can have this experience as you look for opportunities to serve people around you that may be less fortunate.

I had the great opportunity to address the students at The Other Side Academy this Wednesday. I appreciate the warm welcome that the students and the staff members extended to me. It was a very special moment for me. I want to express my gratitude to Joseph and Celia Grenny for their passionate spirit and compassionate hearts. This place transforms lives. If you have an opportunity to visit TOSA, I would encourage you to do so.

 With much gratitude!
