INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL – Mastermind Council in Utah County

Purpose of a Mastermind

In Napoleon Hill’s classic book, Think and Grow Rich, Hill claims that the Master Mind was Andrew Carnegie’s secret of success. He defines the Master Mind as “coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people for the attainment of a definite purpose.” It is easy to see how a group of business owners meeting together on a regular basis can share experiences and expertise that can benefit each member of the group. What’s not so easy, however, is for businesses owners to form such a Master Mind group. Illens is doing the hard work by facilitating the formation of Master Mind groups. He is taping his network of successful business owners and organizing synergistic Master Mind groups. As a member of one of these groups, it is easy for me to see the value and how being a part of one of Illen’s Master Mind groups will contribute to the success of each of the members of our group.

 Personal Master Mind Council Experience

At one of our Master Mind Councils one of our members, Russ Bradshaw, a Certified Public Accountant, shared with us the importance of Internal Account Controls. He detailed the different areas where Internal Controls are important and the Control Techniques for each of these areas. These are fundamental accounting control measures that most small businesses don’t put into place until after a costly problem occurs. It would be hard to put an exact value on this one insight from just one Master Mind Council; but as a small business owner I can confidently say that based on my business experiences, it can easily save a company several thousand dollars a year.

 Testimonials

Joining the Mastermind Council has benefited my network, my intellect, and my overall ability as a business owner. I’ve been grateful to learn from others who have made great impacts within their respective industries, and I hope I’ve been able to benefit them as well. I am always looking forward to the next council meeting, as it’s quickly become an important staple of my schedule.

INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL – Purpose of Life – Your Thoughts?

INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL – Purpose of Life – Your Thoughts?

You may have read or heard a version of this statement, “The two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you discover why.

I am in the process of writing a new book that I may title Living in Perfect Harmony or Perfect Harmony with a subtitle How to Live and Lead with Passion and Compassion.

I have an outline for each chapter. The title for the first chapter is The Purpose of Life. I would love to receive your inputs on that first chapter. If you could take few minutes to answer these questions, I would greatly appreciate it. You can be very candid with your answers. If I choose to mention your name in the book, I would reach out to you first before I do so. I encourage you to ponder the first two questions before you share your answers. Even if the answer for a question is “I don’t know or I don’t care”, feel free to share that.

To submit your answer, you can email me at hekdromi@gmail.com or post it on the comment section of this blog.

1)    What is the purpose of life?

2)    What is the purpose of your life? Or what is your mission in this life?

3)    If you have already discovered your purpose or mission in this life, please share, if you can, when and how it happened?

4)    How does that discovery impact your life and/or your daily decisions?

5)    If you have not found out why yet, would you like to find out why?

6)    How would that knowledge affect or change your behavior and actions?

Would you be interested in reading this book? Which title for the book resonates the most with you?  Why? Living in Perfect Harmony or Perfect Harmony. I also encourage you to share these questions with people in your circle of influence and invite them to answer them.

Inspiring Thoughts by Illens Dort – Take a Moment To “Live Astonished.”

Inspiring Thoughts by Illens Dort – Take a Moment To “Live Astonished.”

On August 2, 2018, Scott and Barb Elder, founders of Live Astonished, took a group of young people and their mentors to Zion National Park to enjoy a remarkable and unforgettable moment. One of the youths who participated in the retreats exclaimed, as he was having a great time in the water and enjoying the beautiful mountains, “I am having the best day of my life.”

The mission of Live Astonished is “to show teen aged youth from financially challenged families how to live astonished each day.” They do that by taking these youths to beautiful places like Zion National Park where they can connect with nature, connect with themselves, and connect with others. I was privileged to participate with them. I too experienced many awesome reflective moments.

While we were there I met some visitors from Europe including 3 families from France. I took few minutes to converse with them. They traveled from far to come to Southern Utah to experience these majestic mountains and all the other wonders that Utah has to offer. While many traveled from all over the world to these places that are in our “backyard”, it is not unusual to find someone who lives only few hours from these places and yet has not taken the time to enjoy them.

On the Home page of Liveastonished.org one can read this admonition from Albert Einstein, “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom the emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand wrapped in awe, is as good as dead —his eyes are closed.”

All of us should take time to connect with nature wherever we are. We need to pause even for few seconds to appreciate the beauty of this great planet. We need to slow down a little bit, look up, look around and even look down. There is beauty all around us. Can we see it? We all need to take a moment to “Live Astonished”. As we do so we will be more grateful for having this world to live in; we will also be more compassionate to one another and even to all God’s creation.

Inspiring Thoughts by Illens Dort – Pause To Connect and Appreciate

Inspiring Thoughts by Illens Dort – Pause To Connect and Appreciate

Take time to reflect on the beauty of this earth and to connect with nature.

Taking time to reflect daily brings us closer to our purpose in this life. We are not fugitives who are lost on the road of this mortal probation. We came to earth with a unique goal and a mission to accomplish. We were given an assignment and a road map. We accepted both the goal and the plan.

At the end of each day we might find it useful to take time to ponder and reflect on the good we have done. We need to take time to reflect on the beauty of this earth and to connect with nature.

John C. Maxwell, intentionally respected leadership expert, speaker, trainer, coach and New York Times Bestselling author states, “Reflection turns experience into insight. As we pull away and we reflect our experiences can become insight if let life-lessons be taught to us.”

Today I was in Southern Utah. I looked at the mountain. I saw beauty all around me. Even though the mountain I was looking at did not have much vegetations, it was still beautiful. There is beauty all around us. The question is do we make time to see it, appreciate it and connect with the beauty of this planet?

Inspiring Thoughts by Illens Dort – Character – Competency – Compassion – Community

Inspiring Thoughts by Illens Dort – Character – Competency – Compassion – Community

“Be true to character”. Be competent. Be compassionate. Serve your community.

Peter Drucker who was known as the father of modern-day management shared the 4 Cs of excellent leadership. Some refer to them as the DNA of authentic leadership. There are Competency, Character, Compassion, and Community. When you think of leading you need to remember your home, community, and work. You also need to remember to start with yourself. Let me share my thoughts on these 4 Cs. I also invite you to do the same.

Character: It is your brand, your passport, and your reputation. In my book Thinking and acting with a Compassionate Heart, I have an aphorism that states, “Be true to your yourself. For no one knows you that well.” Your character goes before you. It travels with you. And it stays behind you long after you are gone. When you are true to character, you can have a peace of mind even when you are navigated through stormy water and flying in the midst of thick turbulence. These tough times will call. But you can still remain calm.

Competency: It is what you owe to people you lead. It is the drive that is in you that propels you to find your talents and passion and to be the best you can. Talent is not enough. It is the dedication, the work ethic and the caring for others that will keep you going when tough times come. I love these lines that I read from the book Becoming Your Best by Steve Shallenberger, “Good, Better, Best. Never let it rest. Til’ the good is better. And the better is best.” Whatever you do, keep doing your best.

I remember when I went to Snow College, many, many years ago. I had a job on campus to clean the offices. I always did my best so when I went back to school the next day I could tell without any hesitation that I was the one who vacuumed that room if someone wanted to know. Even when no one wanted to know I still did my best because I knew I was the one who did it. I wanted to stand behind my work. Being competent is different than being perfect.

Character and competency is about our passion. Compassion and community is about others. And yet all four of them work well together. It is refreshing to have people like Peter Drucker and many others that I enjoy learning from talk about these 4 Cs. Of all these 4 Cs character is the glue. There are a lot of people in the world who are competent. But some of them fall short in the area of character. I can promise you that someone who is true to character will always try to work to give his best.

Compassion is the good deed that we do to alleviate the suffering of others. This definition applies to every aspect of life: home, community, and work. In business we talk about pain point and solutions to problems. Does what you do solve the problem – remove the pain of your customers. If not, you serve yourself. There is no compassion in self-service.

Community: This is the basic fabric of society. The first element of your community is you. Your family is your first community. Your deeds influence the members of your community. Your customers, employees, and management team are members of your community. When you are making decisions, do you think of them? Without a community there is no true meaning to anything we do.

We are in this world together. We need one another. “Be true to character”. Be competent. Be compassionate. Serve your community. My name is Illens Dort. I am grateful that we share the same community.
