Reese Witherspoon, Oscar-winning actress, states, “Many people worry so much about managing their careers but rarely spend half that time managing their lives. I want to make my life, not just my job, the best it can be. The rest will work itself out.” Another fact is that some people don’t even take time to manage their careers. The very few that have learned the wisdom to manage both their lives and careers and had the courage and the discipline to do it have enjoyed a great life and a rewarding and satisfying career. What could be the secret one may ask? The answer is very simple.
Ø You have to start with managing your life by finding out who you really are, the purpose of your life, your mission and calling in life.
Ø Next you must value other human beings, not only human beings, but the whole creation. When you value people and appreciate the beauty of the earth, you become more interconnected.
Ø You must strive every day to dkko your best and help others do the same.
Ø You must have priorities. There is much wisdom in this Haitian proverb; “An animal can have four legs. But it can’t run in four directions at once.”
Ø You must live a life of passion that is infused with compassion.
Combining these elements together helps you live a more meaningful and productive life. The job that you do (or your chosen career) can become more enjoyable. No one should want to retire from doing good works. At some stage in your life you may want to use different mechanisms and approaches to do great works. I know many people who are in their mid-eighties and mid-nineties who are doing great works that touch and bless millions of lives. They are so excited about their work. They also enjoy life.
Some people who are reading this post may wonder if they can apply these principles where they currently are; at home, at work, and in their community. The answer is also Yes. You can choose to be a little kinder; show more respectful for the environment where you are including your work environment; find ways to serve others instead of waiting to be served, do a little bit more than what expected of you, smile a little bit more often even when you don’t feel like it, be quick to forgive others, seek forgiveness if you have offended someone; be a light that shines the way for others.
Life is work and good works make life more enjoyable for all. Since there is no end to life, there is no end to good works. Let your light [life] shine that your Father in Heaven [and your earthly siblings] may see your good works. This is a daily task. Let us begin today. Let us do what we can today. Let what we do today help us be more ready and excited to embrace tomorrow.
