“The most memorable gifts I have ever received are those whose value could not be measured in terms of dollars and cents. They are the heartfelt letters, emails, and cards I receive from people thinking me for guidance and advice.” —Keith Ferrazzi

There are things that will never go out of style. Some of these things include kindness, good manners, and handwritten notes. Handwritten notes are powerful. For example, a book that is signed by the author has more sentimental value to the person who receives it than a book that does not have the signature of the author. Overtime, that book may even have more monetary value. Why is this the case when both copies have exactly the same content? The answer is simple. It is because the one with the signature offers a greater feeling of appreciation for and connectedness with the author. In general, the recipient of the signed copy tends to want to give that copy forever. The signed copy becomes more precious.

Another example can be found in the joy that parents have when they receive a handwritten note from their children or when a spouse writes a simple note to express their feeling to the other person. Not too along ago a friend of mine shared the impact a handwritten letter that his dad wrote to his mother many years ago. His dad already died. His mother is in her advanced age. He was helping the mother organize and sort valuable things in the house when he found that letter at the very bottom of a draw. This letter that has a lot of tender words shows how much his dad loved his mother. My friend was overcome by emotions when he was sharing that experience.

Handwritten notes have a powerful effect in the business world as well. If you want to test its power, try this. Take time to observe people in your organization. As you notice them doing something great, go back to your office or cubicle, take few seconds to write a note of appreciation. Don’t type it. Don’t send an email. Just use a pen and a piece of paper. Do it the old-fashion way. Don’t call them to your office or cubicle to come get the note. Take it to that person and thank him and her. This simple gesture of kindness and consideration will touch their heart and yours.

We are all equipped with all the tools we need to be kind and considerate. All we need to do is to dig deeper into the heart where the everlasting fountain of love, kindness, and compassion resides. Write a simple handwritten note today to someone you care about. Show that person that you love them enough to take time to write this precious note.
