INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL – Discovering Your Why

INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL – Discovering Your Why

If we don’t take time to find out the “why”, we will spend a great portion of our time here on earth wondering why.” —Illens Dort

Life is all about people. It is easy to get caught in the “how and what” and forget the “why”. If we don’t take time to find out the “why”, we will spend a great portion of our time here on earth wondering why. Once we know the “why”, we need to find the courage to do it and to stay the course even when the road is rocky and thorny. As we seek to understand the “why” and have a determination to embrace it, we can gain the energy and the will power to know the “how” and to implement the “what”. While each one of us is unique, but there is no singular life. Our “why” is also a piece of other people’s “why”. Their “why” is also a piece of ours. George Burton Adams puts it this way, “We are made up of thousands of others. Everyone who has ever done a kind deed for us, or spoken one word of encouragement to us, has entered into the make-up of our character and of our thoughts, as well as our success.”

Some questions to consider : Why do we do what we do? What impact do our actions and behavior have on people around us? Share with us how you discover your “why” and what you do to embrace it?

A great book to read is Start with Why by Simon Sinek.

INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL – Take Time To Reflect and Grow

INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL – Take Time To Reflect and Grow

Taking time to reflect daily brings us closer to our purpose in this life.” —Illens Dort

Taking time to reflect daily brings us closer to our purpose in this life. We are not fugitives who are lost on the road of this mortal probation. We came to earth with a unique goal and a mission to accomplish. We were given an assignment and a road map. We accepted both the goal and the plan. At the end of each day we might find it useful to take time to ponder and reflect on the good we have done. We would benefit by pausing to contemplate the lessons we have learned and find a way to encapsulate them in a small package – a thought.

John C. Maxwell, intentionally respected leadership expert, speaker, trainer, coach and New York Times Bestselling author states, “Reflection turns experience into insight. As we pull away and we reflect our experiences can become insight if let life-lessons be taught to us.”

Some Reflective Questions

If I were called to meet my Maker today, would I be able to look Him in the eye and report that I have done my very best? Did I lift a life? Was my world or community a better place because of me being a part of it?

Inspiring Thoughts by Illens Dort – Service and Gratitude – Week 5

Inspiring Thoughts by Illens Dort – Service and Gratitude – Week 5

Today is your day to live and serve others. For tomorrow may never come in this life.” —Illens Dort

In June of 2015, I was in the Dominican Republic with International Aid Serving Kids, a nonprofit organization that focuses on health care and vocational training for people who live in abject poverty in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. We had a wonderful week serving together.

On the last day of service, Friday, June 12, I received a text from my wife informing me that our oldest son, Bedford, was in the hospital in intensive care. She explained that he had collapsed while he was in the gym and had to be brought back to life. Luckily for him, he had a friend who was there who started CPR. There was also a doctor in the Gym that worked on him. They also called the paramedic team.

They had to use extensive resuscitation technique to revive him several times while he was in the ambulance. When he got to the hospital and regained consciousness he was wondering where he was and how he got there. He did not recall any of the activity that took place. His ribs were extremely sore due to the extreme pressure they had to apply to get his heart to start beating again.

He is now doing extremely well. He often joked about the fact that he had a new birth. He celebrates two birthdays—the day he was born and the day he was revived. You may know someone who is dear to you who has left this mortal probation in a “clin d’oeil” (twinkling of an eye). When that happens we often wish we had taken time to let them know how much loved them.

There are opportunities all around us to serve others. We don’t need to travel far. All we need to do is to open our heart and mind and seize the moment. We can serve at home, in our community, and at work. Wherever there are people, there is an opportunity to serve. Serving our fellowmen gives us an opportunity to show gratituce for the blessings of being alive.

Please take a moment to share with us a time when you had received help from someone and the impact it had on you. Or you can share a moment when you had taken time to rescue someone and how that service had blessed you and that person.

I had the privillege of speaking at the Spanish Fork Chamber of Commerce meeting yesterday. I want to take a moment to thank Matt Harrison for the invitation. This was a friendly and a warm group of business leaders.

INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL – Preparation and Resiliency

INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL – Preparation and Resiliency

In life and in business we sometime face external and even internal forces and distraction that are outside of our control. The way we embrace these external forces can make a huge difference in the outcomes.” —Illens Dort

This thought is inspired by an observation and a reflective moment of my good friend, Angela Bennett.  Angela states “Yesterday, it was a beautiful spring day. And I was out taking photos of the gorgeous tulips. This morning I woke up and it was snowing. I walked into this beautiful building and right outside there were these beautiful tulips and daffodils. They were covered with snow. I thought to myself if they can survive, so can we.” In life and in business we sometime face external and even internal forces and distraction that are outside of our control. The way we embrace these external forces can make a huge difference in the outcomes. What are you doing daily to prepare yourselves to face these challenges so you can continue to strive and survive?
