INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL – Meaningful Communication

INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL – Meaningful Communication

“I never ask a question that I am not willing to take the time to hear the answer to.” Illens Dort

Few weeks ago, my good friend Shauna Brown – Director of Project Read  in Provo – emailed me and asked if I would come and present to his staff and students on the subject of communication. She told me they hold a monthly Launch and Learn. The date for this month was July 20. This was also my birthday. I did not tell that this would be on my birthday.

I thought what a great blessing and opportunity to be able to go and support her and her staff in this wonderful work they are doing with this great Project Read. The announcement of this topic Everyone Communicate, Few Connect appealed also to audience outside of the project. In addition to the staff and students of the Project Read, there were store managers and college students. A young man who recently graduated from high school was also in attendance. It was a delight for me to be with them and spend a portion of birthday with this wonderful group.

Here is a brief summary of the impact of the presentation that Lesli Mortensen who is over Communication shared: “So happy to have Illens Dort present at our Lunch and Learn activity today! So many great takeaways about how meaningful connection with others always builds your influence to do good. Our favorite quote from the day: “I never ask a question that I am not willing to take the time to hear the answer to. Great advice for being genuine communicators and people.”

I did a Lunch and Learn for Clint Weight and his team in Lindon, Utah. The subject was Everyone Communicates, Few Connect. This is a wonderful group of business people that represent Clint and his business with Aflac products. I remembered to take the picture at the end of the presentation. At that time half of the participants had already left. Many of them work from home.

In the short video below, McEgan Nelson shares the impact the training had on him. He shared this thought three weeks after he attended the training. I saw him in the office as I went back to follow up. I just asked him the question because I wanted to get his feedback.

Clint Weight and his team in Lindon, Utah are doing a fantastic job serving their customers. They represent Aflac in this part of the state.

INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL – Communicating and Connecting

Workshop held at Corporate Alliance in Midvate – June 19, 2018 – Everyone Communicates, Few Connect.

“I have known Illens Dort for many years.  He has always impressed me in every situation I have encountered him. I had the opportunity to attend his 2-hour training.  He is masterful in his content writing and presenting.  I loved the understanding that your influence will never exceed your connection with any individual.  I have learned so much from Illens and his training was no different.  It has stayed with me and made an impact.”  —Pam Wilson

“A good teacher connects with the materials he teachers and hopes or even at time wants to force the learners to connect with the materials. An excellent teacher connects with the materials and also connects with the learners. By connecting with the learners and the materials, the excellent teacher creates an environment so the learners can also connect with the materials. This is also true for connectors and influencers. They are passionate and they also know the importance of connecting with their audience.” —Illens Dort

The next workshop will be held at Corporate Alliance in Provo on July 18 from 1 to 3. The topic is THE TRANSFORMATION CHALLENGE (A new approach to winning in business and life!).

Think about the biggest issues you are dealing with right now, either in your business or personal life. Maybe you’re trying to hit a sales goal, or your team has too much turnover, or you would like to help a struggling department soar. Maybe your health isn’t where you want it, or your relationships could be better.

Whatever the issue, imagine if you had a reliable process that empowered you to navigate change and solve any of your challenges. What if that process provided an actionable plan and pathway that would turn your dreams and opportunities into reality? What would that process be worth to you personally, professionally, and in your relationships? Imagine how great you will feel and the energy it will bring to your team when you not only successfully navigate change and solve your problem, but you exceed your expectations.

This is the heart of The Transformation Challenge: to apply our propriety Six-Step Process to any issue in your life—from the business-oriented to the personal—and discover how the process transforms the issue into a positive outcome.

INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL

INVESTING IN HUMAN CAPITAL

Few months ago, this year, I had the opportunity to speak to a wonderful group of CEOs in Utah. I was invited by Mr. Rich Tyson, President and Founder of CEObuilder. I have attended, on several occasions their forum and learned from these great leaders as well. I always enjoy the opportunity to connect and collaborate with them. Knowing the caliber of these people who attend the Utah CEObuilder Forum made it a delight for me to accept the invitation to present to them. I appreciate their feedback and thank them for that.

“Illens Dort recently addressed the Utah CEObuilder CEO Forum. His presentation was entitled “Everyone Communicates, Few Connect.” He shared Five Key Connecting Principles which are based on a book by renowned author John C Maxwell.

Those principles included:

  1.  A recognition that a focus on connecting increases your influence.
  2.  A focus on others rather than on ourselves.
  3.  Communication which goes beyond words.
  4.  Bringing energy to the opportunity for connecting.
  5.  Developing personal skills in connecting.

In subsequent coaching sessions, the CEOs who attended cited the value of the content as well as the passion and energy that Mr. Dort brought to the presentation. We look forward to future opportunities to have Mr. Dort address us.”

The Power of Positive Influence

The Power of Positive Influence

“Creating positive influence will not only be a catalyst to your success, it will become the legacy you will leave behind.” — Dr. John C. Maxwell

On this beautiful Spring morning I had the honor of speaking at Polaris High School in Orem, Utah. I love this school. I admire the great work Mrs. Lori Thorn and her staff are doing there. Everyone who works at the school demonstrates a genuine passion to serve these students. I also appreciate the warm welcome the students extended to me. They were kind and respectful during the entire presentation.

The topic I chose to address was The Power of Positive Influence. As Dr. John C. Maxwell and his team (The John Maxwell Team) say it, “Creating positive influence will not only be a catalyst to your success, it will become the legacy you will leave behind.” No matter where we are and what we are doing, we influence someone and we are influenced by others. The question is what kind of influencers are we? What can we do to increase our influence with others?

Let me share only in this post one simple principle that helps to increase our influence with others in any situation and any country. The principle is Kindness. It does not require much to be kind and speak kind words to one another. Oh, how much I love these words of the Poet Joseph L. Townsend written over 150 years ago:

            Let us oft speak kind words to each other at home or wherever we may be;

Like the war-blings of birds on the heath-er, the tones will be welcome and free.

They will gladden the hear that is repining, give courage and hope from above.

And where the dark clouds hide the shining, let in the bright sunlight of love.

Oh, the kind words we give shall in memory live and sunshine forever impart.

Let us oft speak kind words to each other; kind words are sweet tones of the heart.

By just reading and reflecting on these words, my heart becomes a little sweeter. Can you think of someone today that you can speak kind word to? Do you have someone in your life that speaks kind words to you? Would you please take a moment and let that person know how much you appreciate the power of his or her positive influence?

The other principles that help increase our influence with people are service and how ability to connect with others. In a different post I will address these two principles.

From now and always; “Let us oft speak kind words to each other; kind words are sweet tones of the heart.”
